DETROIT, Mich., August 24, 2010 – Tournament organizers are happy to report the 2010 Paul W. Smith Golf Classic, benefiting Think Detroit PAL was a huge success. Thanks to the overwhelming support from the Detroit area business community, the tournament netted its highest total of $445,000 – bringing the total net funds raised to nearly $2.5 million in seven years.
The tournament was held on Monday, August 16. Title sponsor News/Talk 760 WJR was joined by presenting sponsors Ford Motor Company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., Inc, Compuware Corporation, Chrysler Group LLC, and PNC Financial Services.
The tournament took place at the Detroit Golf Club and featured shotgun starts on the North and South courses. Golfers were awarded prizes donated by local businesses for hole contests, including longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin. An on-site silent auction contributed to the funds raised in support of Think Detroit PAL.
The Paul W. Smith Golf Classic is Think Detroit PAL’s top fundraiser. The organization provides character enriching opportunities in athletic, academic and leadership development programs to 12,000 Detroit youth.
The day concluded with an awards reception and dinner. Paul W. Smith hosted the reception and offered thanks to the elite group of sponsors for their continued support. Think Detroit PAL participants Amber Worthy, Jr., age 16 of Detroit, and Paul Jones, age 13 of Detroit, spoke. Worthy, Jr. is a former Think Detroit PAL cheerleader and now a coach for the cheerleading program. Jones has been a participant of the Think Detroit PAL golf program since 2006. Both highlighted the valuable lessons they have learned from participating in Think Detroit PAL’s diverse programs, not only in their athletic discipline, but also the life lessons taught by the organization’s volunteers and mentors.
The tournament’s annual Distinguished Service Award was presented to Dan Varner, Program Officer at the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Think Detroit PAL board member. The award honors an individual for his or her outstanding service that benefits Think Detroit PAL.
